When I was at Fidelity Investments (FMR Co) back in the 1990s, legendary investor Peter Lynch had moved on, but the culture he helped create, one fully dedicated to active management and high performance, was still in place. Fidelity hired the best and brightest and gave them every opportunity as early as possible to become portfolio managers of their own funds — no team involved. For example:

  • Will Danoff, who still manages Fidelity Contrafund, was 26 years old when he first became a portfolio manager.
  • Steve Wymer, of Fidelity Growth Company, was 27.
  • Joel Tillinghast of Fidelity Low-Priced Stock, was 30.
  • Even Peter Lynch was just over 30 years old when he took over the famous Magellan Fund. That became the largest fund in the world and stayed that way for many years.

At CLS Investments, we are often told our team is young. Sometimes, clients are even concerned at the perceived lack of experience. But the youngest of our portfolio managers is older than those examples. Each member of our investment team has many years of experience, and thanks to technology that means more today than it used to. Portfolio managers can accelerate their learning and responsibilities faster than when people like me entered the industry. For example, early in my career, I spent a lot of time gathering and scrubbing data so others could analyze it. Now, the databases are already there. In other words, an analyst or portfolio manager with five years of experience in today’s markets has more experience making investment decisions than someone with similar years of experience several decades ago.

Bottom line: Our team has skills. It has energy. It has talent. And, most of all, it has experience.
